With many mountains and high rainfall, it is not surprising that rafting has become very popular in Costa Rica. Rivers with pronounced inclines in mountain foothills are “whitewater” rivers with ample wave action and varied conditions to give rafters thrilling rides. Rivers categorized as Class IV are for experienced rafters or people with some experience and very physically fit. Rivers from class III to IV are intermediate levels appropriate for people in good physical condition and limited experience on rivers. Trained bilingual rafting guides and a person in a kayak who follows the rafts help to assure the rafters’ safety.
