Last weekend our guide Leo Chaves, visited Albergue del Socorro, a rainforest Lodge owned by Don Jose Miranda. Two years ago the Cinchona earthquake destroyed Don Jose´s house and caused great damage to the cabins, today with economic support from CRST and other people, they have a new restaurant, known as “Rancho” serving delicious meals like the traditional casado.

We are happy to see Don Jose´s family is again receiving tourists. Albergue del Socorro is located at aproximately 1000 mts elevation on the Caribean side, making it a hotspot for birding in Costa Rica. It is part of the Costa Rica Bird Route, a suggested route for birders to see high diversity of caribean species. Contact us to enjoy the best host, best local meal and the best birding, just 45 minutes from Sarapiqui hotels!

The nest observation tower

“A 28 m. (92 ft.) observation tower dedicated to the viewing of canopy birds and other wildlife. Placed in the center of the rainforest, The Nest offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities. As you ascend the 146 stairs to the top, keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife moving through the lower levels of the trees. Once at the top, you will be treated to an incredible 360° panoramic view of Arenal Volcano, Arenal Lake, Cerro Chato, and the Tilarán Mountain Range. This is the perfect spot to scan the canopy for birds and other wildlife amongst the treetops. With a telescope, you may even find some aquatic birds in the areas surrounding the lake Arenal.”
