Tortuguero is a little town at the Caribbean Sea in the North of Costa Rica, near the border of Nicaragua. You can only reach this place either by plane or by boat. My parents were lucky to go there first by boat with me and later on by plane only the two of them to another destination called Arenal.
The Hotel called Evergreen Lodge was indeed a very green place, with little lodges everywhere and a big pool surrounded by palms. So while enjoying the time at the pool and having the jungle present, there are great chances to see monkeys with their little babies on their backs jumping from one tree to another.
The first day we had a town walk through Tortuguero which consists mainly of a principal round with shops, restaurants and small houses on both sides. And we went for a short time at the beach so see where the turtles dig their wholes for their babies. Furthermore the next day already at 6 am we made a boat tour on the canals. So we had the chance to see a lot of birds, monkeys, caimans and even a crocodile hiding in some water plants. The entire atmosphere of the canals, the jungle and all the noise of all the animals living there, was very impressive. And for a moment we really had to realize that this is not only a visit in the zoo, but the real nature in Tortuguero. The last tour was a walk through the jungle, where we got to know the plants a little bit better. Moreover we saw some sloths, monkeys and beautiful butterflies.
All in all it was a great experience in Tortuguero for all of us, but especially for my mum because for her one dream became true to visit a jungle and see all the wildlife there. Her other dream to see a volcano became true when they flew right over volcano Arenal and could admire its crater from above. By Clarissa Pohl
