/ Volcano / Carara-Villa Lapas
3
days / 2 nights
A visit to Poas volcano en route to the Central Pacific
Coast where you will visit Carara National Park and
enjoy a boat trip on the Guacalillo River.
Day
1: Morning drive with your driver/guide to
Poas Volcano. This volcano's colorful crater is one
of the widest and deepest in the world! You may stand
on the edge and look down into its cauldron. Its second
crater, Botos, is a crystal clear rain-fed lake surrounded
by highland jungle and can be reached by a half-mile
walk through a unique dwarf cloud forest. After exploring
the park, continue to the Central Pacific Coast stopping
en route for lunch on your own. Arrive at Villa Lapas
Hotel near the Carara National Park. (D)
Day
2: Enjoy a hike with your guide inside the
Carara National Park, located at the geographical midpoint
of the Pacific Coast. Carara has a transitional climate
between the hot and dry northwest, and the rainy region
of southwest Costa Rica. It is home to parrots, parakeets,
toucan, trogons, three species of monkeys, and one of
only three viable populations of Scarlet Macaws in Central
America. In the afternoon you can go back to the park
or to nearby Jaco or Punta Leona to spend some time
at the beach. (BD)
Note:
As an optional activity we can arrange for a boat tour
to nearby Guacalillo. This 2-3 hour boat tour gives
you the chance to experience nature up-close-viewing
many species of mangrove/river birds, crocodiles and
monkeys.
Day 3: In the morning enjoy a guided
hike to the Villa Lapas Aerial Skyway where you can
explore a series of suspended bridges in the canopy
of the forest. From its highest point, you can enjoy
a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Nicoya. Late morning
departure back to San Jose, or if time permits, you
may want to extend your trip further south to Manuel
Antonio National Park or up north to the pacific beaches
of Guanacaste. (B)
