Sarapiqui / Arenal Observatory

Experience the active Arenal Volcano up-close!

Day 1: Scenic drive with Costa Rica Sun Tours driver/guide to Arenal Volcano, stop en route at La Paz Waterfall Gardens for an up close view at a system of 5 different waterfalls and lunch. After lunch continue to Arenal. Dinner and overnight stay at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. From the Observatory, which is situated only 1.6 miles south of the volcano, visitors have an impressive view of the "giant which rumbles" and erupts with spectacular displays of vapor and lava. The Observatory is the only lodge situated within the Arenal Volcano National Park, which encompasses thousands of acres of pristine rainforest and teems with tropical birds and wildlife. (LD)

Day 2: The next morning enjoy a hike to a nearby waterfall and a close-up exploration of a lava flow before returning to San Jose. (B)

Note: If time permits, you can enjoy more activities for additional costs. You may opt to take a strenuous hike and canoe ride in the beautiful and mysterious crater lake of the extinct volcano Cerro Chato. There is also an optional full day trip from the Observatory Lodge to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, which involves a 2 hour drive through farms and citrus groves to the town of Los Chiles In Los Chiles you will board a riverboat for an exciting trip down the Rio Frio to the refuge of Caño Negro.

Poas / Volcano / Carara-Villa Lapas

3 days / 2 nights

A visit to Poas volcano en route to the Central Pacific Coast where you will visit Carara National Park and enjoy a boat trip on the Guacalillo River.

Day 1: Morning drive with your driver/guide to Poas Volcano. This volcano's colorful crater is one of the widest and deepest in the world! You may stand on the edge and look down into its cauldron. Its second crater, Botos, is a crystal clear rain-fed lake surrounded by highland jungle and can be reached by a half-mile walk through a unique dwarf cloud forest. After exploring the park, continue to the Central Pacific Coast stopping en route for lunch on your own. Arrive at Villa Lapas Hotel near the Carara National Park. (D)

Day 2: Enjoy a hike with your guide inside the Carara National Park, located at the geographical midpoint of the Pacific Coast. Carara has a transitional climate between the hot and dry northwest, and the rainy region of southwest Costa Rica. It is home to parrots, parakeets, toucan, trogons, three species of monkeys, and one of only three viable populations of Scarlet Macaws in Central America. In the afternoon you can go back to the park or to nearby Jaco or Punta Leona to spend some time at the beach. (BD)

Note: As an optional activity we can arrange for a boat tour to nearby Guacalillo. This 2-3 hour boat tour gives you the chance to experience nature up-close-viewing many species of mangrove/river birds, crocodiles and monkeys.

Day 3: In the morning enjoy a guided hike to the Villa Lapas Aerial Skyway where you can explore a series of suspended bridges in the canopy of the forest. From its highest point, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Nicoya. Late morning departure back to San Jose, or if time permits, you may want to extend your trip further south to Manuel Antonio National Park or up north to the pacific beaches of Guanacaste. (B)

OTS La Selva - Sarapiqui

Transfer to the Atlantic lowlands of Sarapiqui for a visit to La Selva Station, an internationally recognized center for tropical rain forest research and education. La Selva is owned and operated by the Organization of Tropical Studies (OTS), a non profit consortium of more than 50 educational institutions in the United States and Costa Rica. At La Selva you will have an approximately 3 hour guided hike inside the private reserve, where you will have the chance to see some of the more than 300 species of birds and other wildlife like howler monkeys and sloths.
Enjoy lunch at the OTS or perhaps at the nearby town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, then continue to your Hotel in the Sarapiqui area.
