The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most
diverse and rich cloud forests in the New World. The
reserve is 26,000 acres and is an important link in
the growing network of protected areas in Costa Rica.Your
guide will point out many of the incredible birds, plants
and animals for which the reserve is famous. It is best
known as home to the beautiful Resplendent Quetzal but
it protects hundreds of other birds, mammals and plant
species as well as reptiles, amphibians and insects.Included
is round trip transportation from your lodge, entrance
fee and guide.
Horse-back Riding Tours
A lovely way to see the area with a local guide.Witness
views of the Gulf of Nicoya, waterfalls and the valley
of San Luis.
The Butterfly Garden
The Butterfly Garden is a section of frest at a lower
altitude than the Monteverde Reserve that has
been covered with a fine screen. There you can see all
the different butterfly species that inhabit
the zone, including the beautiful Blue Morpho. Guides
give a fascinating explanation of the habits
of each species, with ample botanical information as
well. At the entrance ia a free exhibit about
the butterfly's life cycle.
Sky Walk and Sky Trek
Sky Walk is a complex of suspended bridges and paths,
built within the cloud
forest.These allow the observation of flora and fauna
from the ground level to the top of the trees.There
is 3,280 feet of paths, that have been designed and
built, including five suspended bridges.This is the
best opportunity to know and learn about the complexity
and beauty of the forest.
Sky Trek gives you access to the tropical cloud forest
canopy through a system of tree platforms, ziplines
and suspended bridges. The whole system is integrated
by a path 7000 feet in length. These activites should
be booked at your own discretion.
The Original Canopy Tour
The opportunity to ascend in to the forest canopy using
modified techniques, that were previously done by canyon
rappelers, provides an enjoyable adventure. After a
short hike through the rainforest, you climb up inside
a strangler fig tree to reach the first platform at
its top. Your body harness is then attached to a pulley
system on a steel cable and , at about 75 feet above
ground, you zip across to another tree platform. After
several platforms, you will rappel down to ground level.
This activity should be booked at your own discretion.
Ecological Sanctuary
A secondary forest-farm located on the side and below
the Cloud Forest Reserve, has become a great spotting
place for a big varety of a birds and some large mammals.
The vegetation is less dense and you have an excellent
chance of seeing coatimundis, sloths, agoutis, porcupines,
and white-faced monkeys, as well as butterflies and
birds. Four signed trails lead through the 17-hectare
property. One leads to a waterfall and the Bajo del
Tigre Canyon. Included is roundtrip transportation from
your lodge and entrance fee.
Frog Garden
Afternoon with your guide visit Ranario the Frog Pond
of Monteverde. Tour this new herpetarium where you view
over 20 species of frogs and other amphibians. With
a local guide, learn about the species that are unique
to the tropics of Costa Rica, such as the colorful Poison
Arrow, Red Eyed Tree Frog and the very large Marine
Toad. After the guided tour of the terrariums with simulated
natural habitats, wander through the exhibits of the
frog species and their natural history, visit the art
gallery, gift and coffee shop. Part of the proceeds
from this exhibit is dedicated to research and conservation
efforts. Entrance fees and local guide included.
