Caño Island is located just 12 nautical miles from Drake Bay. The boat trip out to the island is a very scenic ride that takes about 45 minutes. En route you may encounter flying fish, dolphins, or possibly whales! The water in front of the beach has a variety of colorful tropical fish and is great for snorkeling or diving. The main volcanic peak of this park rises 6300 feet above sea level and its steep slopes are densely cloaked by forest up to near the top. The main crater contains a blue lake in its center, and has numerous fumaroles (vents) along its walls that release hot sulfurous steam. In the 1980’s and 1990’s the volcano had several small but powerful eruptions, and such intermittent eruptions will likely continue into the distant future.
