At present, we offer home stays in two regions, in La Trinidad de Dota and el Roble de Sarapiqui.

Morning pick-up at your hotel for a scenic drive with your driver.  Your travels will take you through the mountains through the spectacular cloud and rainforest scenery of Braulio Carrillo National Park en route to the lowland community of El Roble de Sarapiquí.  This area is a region of tropical agriculture that produces bananas and pineapples on large plantations, beef cattle, and local crops such as plantains, papayas, and various root crops.  With some reserves of splendid rainforests (La Selva, Tirimbina) in the area and the Sarapiqui River, tourism featuring birdwatching, nature walks, white water rafting and kayaking, and riverboat tours are also integral parts of the regional economy. In Sarapiqui you will meet your local family(ies) who will be your hosts for the next two days.  They will introduce you to their way of life in this interesting region.

Day 3: VOLUNTEER WORK WITH HOST FAMILIES

Volunteer Work

On this day be prepared to lend a hand!  You may help do “chores” on a farm, do some handywork in the local community (painting the school, trimming up the local town park etc.) help prepare a meal with produce from the farm, “chat” with students in a local school who are trying to learn English,  or any number of country “chores”.  Here local residents raise black pepper, bananas, and pineapples, so you may be asked to help  harvest one of these crops.  As you experience the “hands-on” activity, you will share ideas and learn about your hosts’ way of life in Costa Rica.

Day 4: LA SELVA HALF DAY HIKE

Toucan

OTS La Selva ½ day private tour, including round – trip transportation, lunch and local guide. The Organization for Tropical Studies (O.T.S.) is a 1560-hectare research station and biological reserve.  There are more than 450 species of trees, 400 species of birds (over half the species that reside in Costa Rica), 113 species of mammals, 81 species of reptiles, & 48 species of amphibians that have been identified here.  Here the wildlife is accustomed to the benign presence of researchers and visitors and tranquilly “go about their business” and are easy to observe.

In the afternoon you will spend more time with your host families.  You may enjoy a walk through their community, visit with family and friends, watch a local soccer game, or enjoy some other activity they may have prepared especially for you.  This is a unique opportunity for you learn more about true Costa Rican culture and residents´ life in this small rural community and to share time with your hosts and likely, new friends.
